Webs are done by sewing in air. In other words, by sewing with nothing under the needle. I've tried digitizing webs, but find that when I sew free motion the thread twists in a particular way that I like.

I start with a fine gauze and make a foundation then cut thin strips of the fabric out and make "brides".  After there are enough brides to hold the shape, all the fabric is cut out, and sewing progresses by sewing in air.  This technique is called needle weaving.
